How to Trade

This matchup revolves around understanding Lucian's burst windows versus your sustained poke. Lucian wants to E (Relentless Pursuit) forward, proc his passive (Lightslinger) with Q (Piercing Light), and chunk you with his double-shot combo. Your counter is to use your superior range and Q (Double Up) poke to whittle him down before he can engage. Always position with a low-health minion between you and Lucian so your Q bounces for the critical second-hit damage - this is your primary trading tool since Lucian has to walk into your range to trade. When Lucian uses his E aggressively, immediately respond with E (Make It Rain) to slow him and kite backward while autoing. Your W (Strut) passive movement speed helps you reposition, but remember it breaks on champion damage - so if Lucian lands his combo, you lose your escape tool. The key window is after Lucian uses E: he's committed and has no mobility for 14+ seconds early. Punish this with Q bounces and autos while he retreats.

Wave Management

Freeze the wave near your tower early when possible - Lucian excels at short trades in the middle of the lane where he can E in, combo, and E out (if he takes the reset from passive procs). By keeping the wave on your side, you force him to overextend for CS, making him vulnerable to ganks and your Q bounce poke. Your Q has excellent waveclear for breaking freezes if Lucian tries to set one up against you. Be cautious about hard shoving into Lucian. While your Q and passive (Love Tap) give you strong push potential, Lucian's level 2 all-in with Q-E-passive procs is devastating if he hits the wave first. Contest the push for level 2 but don't sacrifice HP to do so. After first back, your waveclear typically outpaces his, so you can establish slow pushes for dives or roam timers. Use E sparingly for wave manipulation as the mana cost is significant early.

Itemization

Rush Youmuu's Ghostblade as your first item - the lethality amplifies your Q poke significantly and the active movement speed helps you kite Lucian's engage or chase him down. This build path shows strong performance in the matchup. Boots of Swiftness are highly effective here as they help maintain distance from Lucian's dash-heavy playstyle and synergize with your Strut passive. For your second item, Infinity Edge provides the crit scaling your ultimate desperately needs for teamfights. If Lucian is building heavy armor early (unlikely but possible with certain support matchups), consider The Collector second for the lethality stacking. Edge of Night is an excellent 4th item choice as the spell shield can block Lucian's Q poke or his support's engage, giving you safer positioning for your ultimate channel.

Team Fighting

Your teamfight impact significantly outscales Lucian's in most scenarios. Bullet Time (R) is one of the strongest ADC ultimates in the game for grouped fights, while Lucian's The Culling requires him to be stationary and can be body-blocked. Position for flanks or wait for CC from your team to land a full-channel ultimate. A well-placed Bullet Time can win fights before Lucian even gets to auto-attack. Lucian will try to dive your backline with E resets during fights. Save your E (Make It Rain) to peel yourself when he dashes in - the slow significantly hampers his ability to stick to you and proc multiple Lightslinger combos. If your team has strong frontline engage, you can often ignore Lucian entirely and focus on melting his team with R while he's zoned out. Your effective range in teamfights is much higher than his 500 auto range.
