What to remember

How to Trade

Miss Fortune holds a significant advantage in short trades against Caitlyn due to her Q (Double Up) bounce mechanic. Position yourself so that a low-health minion is between you and Caitlyn, then Q the minion to bounce critical damage onto her. Caitlyn's Q (Piltover Peacemaker) is telegraphed and easy to sidestep, so save your W (Strut) movement speed for dodging it rather than using it aggressively. When Caitlyn places W (Yordle Snap Trap) in lane, treat these as opportunities rather than threats. Her traps force her to play predictably around them, and you can use this to set up your own Q bounces. If she traps the wave, she's telling you exactly where she wants to fight - position perpendicular to that line. Your passive (Love Tap) deals bonus damage when switching targets, so in extended trades, auto Caitlyn, then auto a minion, then auto her again for maximum DPS. Avoid standing still to auto-attack when her Headshot passive is stacked, as her empowered auto significantly out-trades your single auto.

Wave Management

Push for level 2 priority aggressively - Miss Fortune's Q and passive allow her to clear the first wave faster than Caitlyn despite the range disadvantage. Hit level 2 first (9 minions) and immediately look for an all-in with your support, as Caitlyn's only escape pre-6 is her E (90 Caliber Net) which has a long cooldown. Maintain a slow push toward her tower during mid-game to set up dives or force her to farm under tower where your E (Make It Rain) slow makes her an easy gank target. Caitlyn wants to freeze near her tower to poke you with her superior range and set up traps - don't let her establish this position. If she does freeze, call your jungler immediately as she has no escape tools if her E is baited out. Your superior waveclear with Q bounces and E allows you to break freezes quickly.

Itemization

Rush Essence Reaver or Collector first depending on your support's CC. If paired with hard engage (Nautilus, Leona), Collector's lethality amplifies your burst during all-ins. Against Caitlyn specifically, early Boots of Swiftness can be valuable to dodge her Q and close the gap when she uses E to create distance. Your core of Essence Reaver into Infinity Edge outscales her standard build by 2 items. Consider an early Executioner's Calling if Caitlyn rushes Bloodthirster or has a healing support like Soraka. Your E applies the Grievous Wounds to her entire team in fights. Avoid Galeforce in this matchup - you don't need the dash against Caitlyn's immobile kit, and the raw damage from lethality or crit items serves you better. Guardian Angel as a 3rd or 4th item protects your R (Bullet Time) channel from her R (Ace in the Hole) assassination attempts.

Team Fighting

Miss Fortune's R (Bullet Time) completely dominates teamfights against Caitlyn's composition. Caitlyn has no way to interrupt your channel from range, and her R is single-target, making her teamfight contribution far weaker than yours. Position behind your frontline and wait for CC to land before channeling - a 3+ person Bullet Time wins fights outright. MF's mid-game teamfight advantage is her primary win condition in this matchup. Watch for Caitlyn's trap placement before fights begin. She'll try to zone your R positioning with W traps in chokepoints. Your E (Make It Rain) reveals and slows enemies, making it perfect for checking brushes before committing to a fight position. If Caitlyn uses her E aggressively to reposition, immediately R in her landing direction - she has no second escape and will eat the full channel. In dragon and baron pits, your R covers the entire objective area while Caitlyn's kit offers no comparable zone control.

Pro Tips

  • Track Caitlyn's Headshot passive stacks (shown under her health bar). Disengage when she has 5-6 stacks and re-engage after she uses it on a minion - this removes her strongest trading tool for 6 autos.
  • Your E (Make It Rain) reveals Caitlyn if she uses her E into brush to escape. Cast E immediately on the brush she dashes toward to maintain vision and slow her for your team to collapse.
  • Save Flash specifically to reposition your R during teamfights, not for lane escapes. A Flash-R onto 3+ enemies is worth dying for; Caitlyn's Flash-R is single-target and far less impactful.

Common Mistakes

  • Standing behind your own minion wave lets Caitlyn Q through minions to poke you for free. Stand perpendicular to the wave so her Q forces her to choose between hitting you or the wave, not both.
  • Using W (Strut) for movement speed to walk up and trade wastes your only escape tool. Caitlyn's E-Q combo will chunk you and you'll have no way to disengage safely. Save W for dodging her Q or escaping ganks.
  • Channeling R without vision of Caitlyn's position allows her to E behind you and cancel it with autos. Always ensure you know where she is before committing to Bullet Time, or have your support CC her first.
