Lucian vs Miss Fortune
Learn how to play Lucian against Miss Fortune in ADC. Lane notes paired with a visible 6,725 game sample.
ADC guide based on 6,725 ranked games from patch 15.3-16.12.
What to remember
- Lucian has a significant advantage in short trades due to his Lightslinger passive and mobility from Relentless Pursuit (E).
- Most early deaths land 2:00-6:00 (69% of them). Play safe there.
- Survive to 5:04 (median first death)
- Track MF's Strut (W) cooldown (12 seconds). When it's down, she loses 25-75 bonus movement speed, making her extremely vulnerable to your all-in. A single auto removes the passive MS, so poke her once then immediately look for the E-Q engage while she's slowed.
How to Trade
Lucian has a significant advantage in short trades due to his Lightslinger passive and mobility from Relentless Pursuit (E). The key to winning trades is engaging after Miss Fortune uses her Double Up (Q) on a minion - this is her primary poke tool and has a longer cooldown than your combo. When trading, use Piercing Light (Q) through minions to proc Lightslinger, then immediately E to reposition and get another double-shot. This burst combo outdamages MF's sustained trading pattern. Miss Fortune's Love Tap passive means her first auto on you deals bonus damage, but subsequent autos on the same target deal less. Use this to your advantage by taking short trades where you dash out before she can stack multiple autos. Be extremely careful of her Make It Rain (E) slow into Double Up - if you're slowed without your E available, she can chunk you hard. The critical interaction to track is her Strut (W) passive: any damage you deal removes her movement speed bonus, so even a single auto or Q poke significantly reduces her ability to chase or escape. Lucian averages a +205 gold difference at 15 minutes despite MF being slightly favored overall, indicating Lucian's lane phase is actually quite strong. Focus your aggression around levels 2-3 when your E-Q-passive combo comes online before MF can match your burst with items.
Wave Management
Wave control matters in this matchup because Miss Fortune excels at poking you when you're forced to walk up to CS. Push for level 2 first by immediately auto-attacking the wave - your Lightslinger passive helps you push faster than MF early. Hitting level 2 first lets you threaten an all-in with E-Q-double auto before she has her full kit. Avoid letting MF freeze near her tower. Her Double Up bounce range is deceptively long, and if you're stuck farming under pressure, she can poke you through dying minions while you're animation-locked. Instead, maintain a slow push toward her side of the lane. This forces her to choose between using abilities to CS (wasting mana and cooldowns) or letting you build a wave advantage. When you have 3-4 minions more than her, you can threaten aggressive trades knowing the minion damage will favor you. Be cautious of her Make It Rain (E) when your wave is pushing into her tower - she can use it to set up jungle ganks or force you into bad positions. If she uses E on the wave to clear, that's a 18-second window where you can trade much more aggressively without fear of the slow.
Itemization
Rush Essence Reaver as your first item - the mana sustain and Spellblade passive synergize perfectly with Lucian's spell-weaving pattern and let you out-trade MF in extended skirmishes. Consider Ionian Boots of Lucidity over Berserker's Greaves in this matchup. The ability haste lets you have Relentless Pursuit up more frequently, which is your primary tool for dodging Bullet Time (R) and repositioning during trades. If MF rushes The Collector or Youmuu's Ghostblade for lethality burst, you may want to pick up a Vampiric Scepter early for sustain before completing your Bloodthirster later. If the enemy team has multiple sources of healing or MF builds lifesteal, consider an early Executioner's Calling. Her W attack speed steroid combined with lifesteal can make her surprisingly durable in extended fights.
Team Fighting
Your primary job in teamfights is to interrupt or punish Miss Fortune's Bullet Time (R). Her ultimate is channeled and deals massive damage in a cone, but you have multiple tools to counter it. Save Relentless Pursuit (E) specifically to dash through her ultimate's hitbox and onto her - she cannot move or reposition during the channel. Your burst combo can either kill her or force her to cancel the ultimate early. If you can't reach MF directly, The Culling (R) can be used to trade ultimates. Your mobility allows you to reposition and channel from safety, and the damage is comparable if she's forced to choose between taking your full ultimate or canceling hers. MF averages higher teamfight damage (22,900 vs 21,449), so don't expect to out-DPS her in extended fights - focus on assassination angles. Position to flank rather than front-to-back in teamfights. MF wants to stand behind her frontline and channel R through your entire team. If you can approach from the side with E-Q-auto, you threaten her positioning and force her to either use R early (for less value) or hold it and lose the DPS race.
Pro Tips
- Track MF's Strut (W) cooldown (12 seconds). When it's down, she loses 25-75 bonus movement speed, making her extremely vulnerable to your all-in. A single auto removes the passive MS, so poke her once then immediately look for the E-Q engage while she's slowed.
- Double Up (Q) bounces at a 500-unit cone behind the first target.
- Your level 2 all-in is stronger than hers. If you hit level 2 first, immediately E forward aggressively - MF has no escape and her damage at level 1-2 cannot match your Lightslinger burst.
Common Mistakes
- Using Relentless Pursuit (E) aggressively when MF has Make It Rain (E) available. Her slow field lasts 2 seconds and you'll be stuck in it without your dash, letting her land free Double Ups and autos. Wait for her to use E defensively or on the wave before committing your dash.
- Standing behind low-health minions during trades. MF players specifically look for Double Up bounce opportunities, and the second hit can crit. Position to the side of your wave, not directly behind dying minions.
- Channeling The Culling (R) predictably in lane. MF can simply walk sideways out of it since she's not CC'd. Only use your ultimate when she's slowed by your support's CC, when she's channeling Bullet Time (and can't move), or when she's trapped against terrain.
