What to remember
- In jungle skirmishes against Graves, Lee Sin must respect Graves' burst damage and innate tankiness from his True Grit passive, which stacks armor when he uses Quickdraw (E).
- SURVIVE 2:00-6:00 (56% of early deaths)
- Survive to 6:26 (median first death)
- Place a Control Ward before engaging Graves in river fights - his Smoke Screen removes your vision, but a pre-placed ward lets you W-hop out of the nearsight zone instantly
How to Trade
In jungle skirmishes against Graves, Lee Sin must respect Graves' burst damage and innate tankiness from his True Grit passive, which stacks armor when he uses Quickdraw (E). When contesting scuttle or invading, land Sonic Wave (Q) first but don't immediately follow with Resonating Strike unless Graves has already used his Quickdraw dash - otherwise he'll reposition and punish you with point-blank buckshot from End of the Line (Q). Your Tempest (E) reveal is valuable since it prevents Graves from using brush to reload safely, and the slow from Cripple helps you stick to him or disengage. The key trading window is when Graves is reloading (he only has 2 shells). If you see him fire twice, that's your moment to engage aggressively with Q-Q-auto-E combo while weaving in passive-empowered auto attacks for maximum damage. However, be extremely cautious of his Smoke Screen (W) - it nearsights you and removes your ability to ward-hop or Q to minions/monsters for escape. If he lands Smoke Screen on you during a trade, use Safeguard (W) to a pre-placed ward or ally immediately rather than trying to fight blind. Graves running Dark Harvest with lethality means his burst scales harder into mid-game.
Wave Management
As a jungle matchup, wave management translates to jungle pathing and camp control. Graves clears faster and healthier than Lee Sin due to his AOE damage and knockback preventing monster damage. You cannot match his full-clear speed, so don't try to mirror his pathing - instead, focus on a 3-camp into gank route (Red/Blue > small camp > small camp > gank) to generate early pressure before Graves hits his item spikes. Contest his second buff spawn aggressively at the 5-minute respawn if you've tracked him to the opposite side of the map. Graves is vulnerable when caught without Quickdraw stacks, and your early dueling with Conqueror fully stacked can win the 1v1. However, avoid extended fights near his jungle camps where he can kite around walls and abuse End of the Line's detonation for massive burst damage.
Itemization
Rush Profane Hydra or Eclipse as your first item depending on game state. Black Cleaver is essential because it shreds Graves' armor stacks from True Grit, making your physical damage actually stick. Avoid pure lethality builds since Graves naturally itemizes into Plated Steelcaps and gains significant armor from his passive. Counter with Sterak's Gage as a third item to survive his Collateral Damage (R) execute combo. Death's Dance is also excellent since Graves deals purely physical damage, letting the bleed passive buy you time to lifesteal back with Iron Will (W2).
Team Fighting
In teamfights, your role shifts from dueling Graves to enabling your team with Dragon's Rage (R) kicks on priority targets. Graves wants to flank and burst squishies with Dark Harvest-empowered combos, so track his positioning and save your ultimate to peel for carries rather than trying to insec Graves himself - his Quickdraw and natural tankiness make him difficult to burst. If you must engage on Graves during teamfights, kick him INTO your team rather than away, as his short attack range makes him vulnerable when displaced into melee range of your frontline. Use Tempest's slow to prevent his Quickdraw resets and force him to fight without full True Grit stacks.
Pro Tips
- Place a Control Ward before engaging Graves in river fights - his Smoke Screen removes your vision, but a pre-placed ward lets you W-hop out of the nearsight zone instantly
- Track Graves' shell count in his ammo UI; engage immediately after his second shot when he's forced to reload for 2+ seconds
- Use Q1 on Graves, wait for him to Quickdraw away, then Q2 and immediately R him back toward your team - this punishes his predictable escape pattern
Common Mistakes
- Following Q2 into Graves when he has both Quickdraw charges and full True Grit stacks - he wins extended trades with armor and sustained DPS
- Fighting inside Smoke Screen instead of immediately ward-hopping out; the nearsight cripples your playmaking potential
- Building full lethality and ignoring Black Cleaver - Graves' passive armor stacking makes armor penetration mandatory for meaningful damage
