Karma vs Lulu
Learn how to play Karma against Lulu in Support. Lane notes paired with a visible 8,448 game sample.
Support guide based on 8,448 ranked games from patch 15.3-16.12.
What to remember
- Karma holds a slight edge in lane trades due to her superior poke range and damage output.
- Most early deaths land 2:00-6:00 (57% of them). Play safe there.
- Survive to 6:57 (median first death)
- Track Lulu's Whimsy cooldown (17-13s based on rank). This is her only hard CC and primary peel tool - when it's down, you have a 10+ second window to force aggressive trades or all-ins with your ADC.
How to Trade
Karma holds a slight edge in lane trades due to her superior poke range and damage output. Your Inner Flame (Q) outranges Lulu's Glitterlance, and when empowered with Mantra (R+Q), the Soulflare detonation zone forces Lulu to respect your spacing or take significant chunk damage. 9 DPM, confirming your role as the aggressor in this lane. The key interaction to master is baiting out Lulu's Whimsy (W) before committing to trades. If Lulu polymorphs your ADC, immediately punish with R+Q since she's used her primary peel tool. Conversely, if she uses Whimsy offensively for the speed boost on her ADC, your Focused Resolve (W) can root the diving target and turn the trade. Be aware that Lulu's Help, Pix! (E) shield plus Pix's bonus damage can win short trades if you miss your Q, so always look to land abilities before she can shield the damage.
Wave Management
Karma's waveclear advantage with Inner Flame allows you to dictate wave states more effectively than Lulu. Use this to build slow pushes into tower dives or to crash waves before roaming for vision control. Your Q splash damage lets you thin waves while simultaneously poking, something Lulu cannot match efficiently without burning significant mana on Glitterlance. When ahead, freeze waves near your tower to force Lulu into dangerous positions where your R+W root becomes a guaranteed kill setup with jungle assistance. Lulu struggles to break freezes without overextending since her waveclear is inferior. When behind or even, focus on keeping waves neutral in the center of lane where your poke advantage shines and Lulu cannot safely stack Pix damage on you through minions.
Itemization
Rush Zaz'Zak's Realmspike as your support item upgrade for the bonus damage proc on your frequent Q pokes - this amplifies your already superior damage output. Malignance into Shurelya's Battlesong is your core build - it gives you ultimate cooldown reduction and team-wide engage/disengage tools that match Lulu's utility. If the game requires more enchanter-style play, Moonstone Renewer paired with Ardent Censer lets you match Lulu's buff-bot playstyle while maintaining your poke threat.
Team Fighting
Both champions excel at protecting carries, but your roles differ significantly in teamfights. Lulu's Wild Growth (R) is reactive - she waits for divers to commit then knocks them up and buffs her carry. Your strength is proactive: use Mantra-empowered Inspire (R+E) to give your entire team a massive shield and movement speed boost BEFORE fights begin. Your team can then engage or reposition advantageously. You should prioritize R+E over R+Q in teamfights unless you need to burst a squishy target. Your team-wide Defiance shield often provides more value than Soulflare damage. However, against Lulu specifically, landing R+W on her ADC can be game-winning - if you root their carry, Lulu's entire kit becomes less effective since she cannot polymorph or shield a CC'd target out of danger.
Pro Tips
- Track Lulu's Whimsy cooldown (17-13s based on rank). This is her only hard CC and primary peel tool - when it's down, you have a 10+ second window to force aggressive trades or all-ins with your ADC.
- Use Inspire (E) on yourself before trading to guarantee Mantra cooldown reduction from Gathering Fire passive when your empowered Q lands, since the shield prevents Pix poke from interrupting your aggression.
- Position to land Q through the minion wave onto Lulu - she often stands behind minions to block Pix bolts, but your Q's splash damage still chunks her while clearing the wave simultaneously.
Common Mistakes
- Wasting Mantra on Q poke when Lulu has Help, Pix! shield available - she'll simply absorb the damage and you've lost your empowerment for 30+ seconds while her E is only 8-10 seconds.
- Ignoring Lulu's level 6 spike - while Karma doesn't gain a new ability at 6, Lulu gains Wild Growth which completely changes all-in dynamics. Respect her newfound dive protection and don't overcommit to kills.
- Failing to punish Lulu when she uses Whimsy offensively on her ADC for trades - this leaves her carry vulnerable to your W root for nearly 15 seconds, which is your primary kill window in lane.
