What to remember

How to Trade

This lane runs close to even - Kai'Sa wins about 49 of every 100 across 7,211 ranked games, so respect Miss Fortune's brutal early poke. Kai'Sa's payoff is the post-6 all-in. MF's Double Up (Q) bounce deals massive damage if it kills the first target, so never stand directly behind a low-health minion. Her passive Love Tap deals bonus damage when she switches targets, meaning she wins short auto-attack trades where she can tap you once and back off. Your counter-strategy is to force extended trades where your Plasma stacks (passive) can proc for burst damage. Wait for MF to use her Q on the wave before trading. Once it's on cooldown (10-8 seconds early), you have a window to stack Plasma with autos and Q (Icathian Rain). Stand inside the minion wave when you Q so the missiles spread across minions and MF, reducing her ability to out-trade you. Your W (Void Seeker) is excellent poke if she's pushed up, but save it for when she's isolated or you're committing to an all-in since it applies 2 Plasma stacks. Post-6, your kill threat increases dramatically. If you land W, you can immediately R (Killer Instinct) onto her. MF has zero mobility - no dash, no blink - so once you're on top of her, she cannot escape.

Wave Management

Early game, let MF push into you slightly. She naturally pushes with her Q bounces and E (Make It Rain) for poke, and a wave near your tower protects you during the dangerous 2:00-6:00 window. Avoid letting the wave fully crash under tower early since your Q makes last-hitting under tower awkward before you have some AD. At 5:29 (median first death timing), you want the wave in a neutral or slightly frozen position near your side. This denies MF's kill pressure while keeping you safe from ganks. Once you hit level 6 and have your first component item, look to hard shove and force her under tower where she must choose between CSing and poking you. MF's weakness is her immobility during Make It Rain (E) and Bullet Time (R). If she uses E aggressively to poke, the wave will push toward you. Use this to set up a freeze and zone her from CS. By 10:00, aim for 71 CS minimum - you scale harder than MF, so going even in CS while staying alive is winning the lane.

Itemization

Rush Blade of the Ruined King or Kraken Slayer depending on enemy team composition. Against MF specifically, Kraken Slayer's burst synergizes with your all-in pattern post-6. Your goal is to evolve Q as quickly as possible (requires 100 bonus AD), which dramatically increases your dueling power. Pick up early boots to help dodge her Q bounces and E slow. If MF rushes Lethality (Youmuu's Ghostblade, Opportunity), she's going for burst - consider taking Exhaust or building an early Vampiric Scepter for sustain. If she goes crit, the lane becomes more about scaling and you should focus on hitting your item spikes. At 15:00, MF typically hits her Lethality spike and you may be -400g behind temporarily. This is her strongest window. Have Stopwatch or Zhonya's components ready if she's fed, as her Bullet Time with Lethality can delete you in teamfights. Your counter-spike comes with Q evolution and Nashor's Tooth if going AP hybrid.

Team Fighting

MF's entire teamfight identity is Bullet Time (R) - a channeled ultimate that shreds teams in chokepoints. Your job as Kai'Sa is to either assassinate her before she channels, or use Killer Instinct (R) to reposition and interrupt her ultimate. Save your R specifically to dive her when she starts channeling; she cannot move or cancel it without losing her damage. In 5v5s, position away from your team to avoid being caught in MF's cone. Your W range (3000 units) lets you poke from extreme distance and set up your R engage. Look for flanks - MF has no self-peel, so if you approach from the side while she's focused on your frontline, she's a free kill. If MF has a strong engage support (Leona, Nautilus), they'll look to lock your team down for Bullet Time. Stay near the edge of fights, wait for her to commit her R, then Killer Instinct onto her. Your evolved E (Supercharge) gives invisibility, making it nearly impossible for her to react to your assassination attempt.

Pro Tips

  • Track MF's passive Love Tap - she deals bonus damage when switching targets. If she just auto'd a minion, don't walk up for a trade immediately as she's looking to tap you next.
  • MF's Strut (W passive) gives her massive movement speed that breaks when she takes damage. One auto attack or W poke removes her mobility advantage for 5 seconds - use this window to force trades or set up ganks.
  • Your R shield scales with AP and activates on arrival. Against MF's burst, the shield can absorb a significant portion of her Q-auto combo, so don't be afraid to R aggressively when you have Plasma stacks ready to proc.

Common Mistakes

  • Standing behind low-health minions and eating Double Up bounces for 200+ damage - always position to the side of dying minions, never directly behind them.
  • Fighting in the 2:00-6:00 window when MF has level/item advantage. She wins short trades with Love Tap and Q; wait for level 6 and your evolved abilities to fight.
  • Using R aggressively without landing W first in teamfights. You lose the shield value and positioning advantage - always confirm W hit or wait for guaranteed Plasma stacks before committing R.
