ADC guide based on 19,879 ranked games from patch 15.3-16.12.
What to remember
- Kai'Sa holds a significant advantage in extended trades against Jhin due to his fixed 4-shot reload mechanic.
- Most early deaths land 2:00-6:00 (67% of them). Play safe there.
- Survive to 4:53 (median first death)
- Count Jhin's shots out loud - engage immediately after his 4th shot when he enters the 2.5 second reload animation. This window is your guaranteed favorable trade.
How to Trade
Kai'Sa holds a significant advantage in extended trades against Jhin due to his fixed 4-shot reload mechanic. When Jhin uses his 4th shot (which crits and deals bonus damage), immediately look to engage with Q (Icathian Rain) while he's locked in his lengthy reload animation. Your passive (Second Skin) plasma stacks synergize perfectly against Jhin's immobility - land W (Void Seeker) to add a stack, then auto-Q-auto to proc the burst damage while he's helpless. Short trades favor Jhin early because his Q (Dancing Grenade) bounces deal increasing damage and his 4th shot chunks hard. Never trade when you're standing near dying minions, as his Q bounce damage escalates dramatically with each kill. Instead, position away from the wave and look for trades when he's used Q to farm. His W (Deadly Flourish) only roots if you've taken damage from him or his allies in the last 4 seconds, so if you dodge his initial poke, you can trade freely without fear of the root. Post-6, your all-in potential skyrockets - Jhin has no mobility and your R (Killer Instinct) shield plus gap-close makes him extremely vulnerable when his Flash is down.
Wave Management
During this period, let Jhin push into you by only last-hitting. Jhin players naturally push because his Q bounces and 4th shot execute minions efficiently. A freeze near your tower denies him the ability to safely poke with W and exposes him to ganks since he has no escape. Once you hit level 6 (target 7:38, fast players hit 7:08), you can start playing more aggressively with wave states. Look to build slow pushes before your level 6 spike - stack 2-3 waves and crash them into tower, then look for an all-in with R as the wave bounces back. Jhin's Curtain Call (R) is useless in close-range fights, so forcing him to choose between farming under tower or trading into your minion advantage puts him in a lose-lose situation. Avoid pushing without vision, as Jhin's W root sets up ganks exceptionally well.
Itemization
Rush Kraken Slayer or Statikk Shiv as your first item to maximize DPS in the extended trades where you dominate. Kai'Sa's evolved Q from bonus AD makes Jhin's reload windows even more punishing. Jhin typically builds The Collector into Infinity Edge for burst damage - your sustained DPS build directly counters his burst-and-retreat playstyle. Consider early Berserker's Greaves to stack plasma faster and chase Jhin during his reload. Executioner's Calling is rarely needed since Jhin has no sustain. If he builds Edge of Night, your W poke becomes less effective for engaging - in this case, look to proc the shield with W before committing R.
Team Fighting
Your teamfight role against Jhin is assassin-diver. Jhin wants to stay at maximum range using Curtain Call and Deadly Flourish to contribute safely. Your R (Killer Instinct) completely nullifies this gameplan - any time Jhin is marked by your W or allies' CC, you can dive directly onto him with a shield. In teamfights, track Jhin's position and wait for him to commit his 4th shot or begin channeling R. Both actions lock him in place and guarantee your W lands. Once marked, R onto him immediately - he has no self-peel except Flash. Even if he survives your initial burst, he's now in melee range with a reload timer while your team collapses. Your E (Supercharge) invisibility during the dash makes it nearly impossible for Jhin to land his skillshots on you during the approach.
Pro Tips
- Count Jhin's shots out loud - engage immediately after his 4th shot when he enters the 2.5 second reload animation. This window is your guaranteed favorable trade.
- Your W (Void Seeker) has longer range than Jhin's auto attacks. In lane, use W to poke and stack plasma from safety, then look for all-ins when he's at 2-3 stacks.
- Jhin's traps (E - Captive Audience) reveal and slow you, setting up his W root. Clear them with abilities or note their positions - stepping on one during an all-in can turn a kill into a death.
Common Mistakes
- Trading near low-health minions where Jhin's Q can bounce for maximum damage.
- Using R aggressively before Jhin uses Flash. His Flash + Galeforce (if built) can create enough distance for him to kite you out. Wait for him to burn mobility before committing R.
- Disrespecting Jhin's level 1-3 burst. His 4th shot + Q combo deals surprising damage early.
