ADC guide based on 15,601 ranked games from patch 15.3-16.12.
What to remember
- Trading against Jhin requires understanding his fixed attack speed and four-shot reload mechanic.
- Most early deaths land 2:00-6:00 (69% of them). Play safe there.
- Survive to 4:47 (median first death)
- Track Jhin's fourth shot by watching his ammo indicator - his gun glows and he has a distinct animation. Never trade into his fourth shot as it crits and deals bonus execute damage based on your missing health.
How to Trade
Trading against Jhin requires understanding his fixed attack speed and four-shot reload mechanic. His fourth shot deals significantly more damage and crits, so track his ammo count (visible under his health bar) and avoid trading when he has his fourth bullet ready. When Jhin is reloading, he cannot auto-attack for approximately 2.5 seconds - this is your prime trading window. Use Switcheroo! (Q) in minigun form to stack attack speed and out-DPS him during his reload, as your sustained damage vastly outscales his burst pattern. Jhin's Deadly Flourish (W) can only root you if you've been marked by damage from him, his allies, or his traps in the last 4 seconds. Play around this by avoiding his Dancing Grenade (Q) bounces and Captive Audience (E) traps before committing to trades. If you get marked, immediately juke sideways to dodge the W root, as getting caught enables devastating follow-up damage. Your Zap! (W) outranges his auto-attacks, so use it to poke him when he steps up to last-hit, but be mindful that Jhin players often position to bounce Q off dying minions onto you for free damage. In extended trades, Jinx has the advantage due to her ramping attack speed in minigun form. However, Jhin excels at short burst trades where he lands Q-auto-W combos then backs off. Don't chase him after he lands his damage combo, as he gains movement speed from crits and will kite you effectively. Instead, look for trades when he wastes Q on the wave or when your support lands crowd control. You can stack minigun attacks without retaliation.
Wave Management
Jhin naturally pushes waves with his Dancing Grenade (Q), which deals increased damage with each bounce if it kills the previous target. Use this to your advantage by letting him push into you early, setting up gank opportunities for your jungler. Position away from low-health minions to avoid taking Q bounce damage while he farms. If Jhin is trying to slow push, match his push with Fishbones (rocket launcher) splash damage, but be conservative with mana. Jhin's Captive Audience (E) traps provide him excellent zone control in lane. He'll often place them in bushes or along common gank paths. Before pushing up, clear these traps with auto-attacks when safe to do so - they have visible indicators and take two hits to destroy. When freezing the wave near your tower, be aware that Jhin can use his long-range W and ultimate to threaten you even under tower, so maintain enough health to survive his poke. During mid-game, Jhin wants to set up slow pushes and use his Curtain Call (R) to influence fights across the map. Counter this by either hard-shoving waves to force him to farm, or by matching his roam timings. Your waveclear with Fishbones rockets is comparable to his, so you can match his push and prevent him from gaining map pressure through wave manipulation.
Itemization
Rush Kraken Slayer or Infinity Edge as your first major item to maximize your DPS advantage in extended fights. Jhin typically builds lethality items like The Collector first, giving him strong burst but limited sustained damage. Your attack speed scaling means you win the DPS race in longer fights, so itemize to survive his initial burst. Consider taking Barrier or Exhaust over Heal if their support has additional burst threat. Boots of Swiftness can be valuable in this matchup to help dodge Jhin's W root and kite around his ultimate. If Jhin builds Rapid Firecannon (which he often does for the extended range on his fourth shot), you need to respect his poke range and may want to rush your own Rapid Firecannon second to match his range advantage. Against heavy lethality Jhin builds, a defensive component like Vampiric Scepter or even early Plated Steelcaps can help you survive lane. Lord Dominik's Regards isn't a priority against Jhin since he's squishy, but it becomes valuable if their team has tanks. Bloodthirster is excellent as a third or fourth item, as the shield helps you survive Jhin's burst combo and his Curtain Call snipes. If Jhin is fed, consider Guardian Angel to deny his execute damage from Curtain Call's missing health scaling.
Team Fighting
In teamfights, your role diverges significantly from Jhin's. He excels at poking with W and setting up fights with Curtain Call from extreme range, while you need to get into auto-attack range to deal damage. Wait for Jhin to use his ultimate before fully committing to fights, as Curtain Call forces him to stand still and channel, making him unable to auto-attack. Once he's used R, you have a significant DPS advantage. Position to avoid Jhin's W root in teamfights - if you get caught, his team can collapse on you. Your Super Mega Death Rocket! (R) can counter-snipe Jhin when he's channeling his ultimate, as he's stationary and vulnerable. Look for opportunities to execute low-health targets with your rocket while Jhin is busy channeling his own ultimate. Jinx's Get Excited! passive matters in this matchup. If you secure a kill or assist, your attack speed and movement speed spike allows you to chase down Jhin during his reload windows. In chaotic teamfights, focus on proccing your passive through any kill participation, then use the movement speed to reposition aggressively. Jhin struggles against mobile, reset-based carries, so play for the snowball.
Pro Tips
- Track Jhin's fourth shot by watching his ammo indicator - his gun glows and he has a distinct animation. Never trade into his fourth shot as it crits and deals bonus execute damage based on your missing health.
- Place Flame Chompers! (E) directly on top of yourself when Jhin's W root lands on you - if he or his support dashes in to follow up, they'll get snared, potentially turning the fight in your favor.
- During Jhin's Curtain Call, you can use your superior mobility to sidestep shots while continuing to auto-attack other targets. Each Curtain Call shot has a brief delay, and the fourth shot is slower but deals more damage - save your dash or flash for the fourth shot if needed.
Common Mistakes
- Standing near low-health minions during laning phase lets Jhin bounce Dancing Grenade onto you for free poke damage that also marks you for his W root.
- Using Flame Chompers! (E) predictively when Jhin isn't committed to fighting - he has no dashes to trap, so save E for when his support engages or to zone him during his reload window.
