What to remember
- Trading against Aphelios as Jinx requires constant awareness of his current weapon combination.
- Most early deaths land 2:00-6:00 (65% of them). Play safe there.
- Survive to 5:53 (median first death)
- Track Aphelios's weapon cycle by watching his off-hand weapon ammo. When his off-hand is nearly empty, he's about to swap to a new primary weapon and may have an awkward combination for 10-15 seconds - this is your window to force trades or all-ins.
How to Trade
Trading against Aphelios as Jinx requires constant awareness of his current weapon combination. When Aphelios has Calibrum (sniper rifle) paired with Gravitum (gravity gun), respect his poke range and root follow-up potential - stay behind minions and avoid extended trades. Your strongest trading windows occur when he's cycling through weaker combinations or when his off-hand weapon is nearly depleted (watch his ammo indicator). Use Fishbones (rocket launcher Q) to poke from outside his auto-attack range when he has Severum (lifesteal pistol) or Crescendum (chakram), as these weapons require him to be closer to maximize damage. Aphelios's Infernum (flamethrower) + Crescendum combination is particularly deadly in close-range trades due to the AOE damage and chakram stacking. If you see this pairing, absolutely do not fight in your minion wave or near your support, as his Q abilities will splash devastating damage. Instead, look for isolated trades with your superior range using Fishbones rockets. Your Zap! (W) is excellent for checking bushes and preventing Aphelios from setting up Calibrum marks on you from fog of war. The key to winning trades is abusing your range advantage with Fishbones while Aphelios is on shorter-range weapons. When he has Calibrum, switch to Pow-Pow (minigun) for faster stacking if he commits to an all-in, as your ramped-up attack speed can outduel him if you dodge his skillshots. Always save Flame Chompers (E) for his Gravitum root follow-up or to disengage when he activates Severum Q for the movement speed burst.
Wave Management
Jinx should generally look to push the wave early against Aphelios to establish level 2 priority, as Aphelios's early wave clear is relatively weak unless he has Infernum. Use Fishbones rockets to splash damage onto both the wave and Aphelios when he steps up to last hit - this forces him to choose between trading back and missing CS. However, be mindful of your mana consumption; over-using Fishbones will leave you vulnerable. When Aphelios has Infernum, avoid letting the wave stack on your side, as his Q (Duskwave) can hit both you and the entire wave simultaneously, giving him strong push and poke. In this scenario, try to keep the wave in the middle of the lane or slightly pushed toward him. If Aphelios is holding Crescendum, he wants short trades near terrain where his turret can stack chakrams - deny this by freezing near your tower when possible, forcing him to overextend for CS. Post-6, be extremely careful about wave states when Aphelios has Infernum or Crescendum available for his ultimate (Moonlight Vigil). A stacked wave near your tower with Infernum R can result in massive AOE damage that wins fights instantly. Keep waves relatively clear before committing to fights, and ping your support to help thin waves if you spot him holding these weapons with ultimate available.
Itemization
Aphelios typically rushes The Collector into Infinity Edge, giving him strong burst and execute potential. As Jinx, you should match his crit scaling by prioritizing your own Infinity Edge rush, but consider Phantom Dancer as a second item if Aphelios is consistently landing Gravitum roots or his team has multiple dive threats - the movement speed and ghosting help you kite more effectively. This is especially important because Severum's lifesteal combined with Legend: Bloodline can make him deceptively tanky in extended fights. For defensive options, Galeforce can be valuable if you're struggling to dodge Calibrum marks or need to reposition against his Crescendum turret setups. Against heavy CC compositions that enable Aphelios to free-hit, Mercurial Scimitar becomes essential.
Team Fighting
In teamfights, both Jinx and Aphelios are hypercarries who want to position safely and deal sustained damage, but their threat profiles differ significantly. Aphelios with Infernum + Crescendum ultimate can single-handedly win teamfights if your team clumps - communicate with your team to spread out when you see this combination. Your Super Mega Death Rocket! (R) is better for picking off low-health targets from range, while his Moonlight Vigil is better for AOE initiation damage. Your passive (Get Excited! ) is the key differentiator in extended teamfights. Once you secure a kill or assist, your attack speed and movement speed spike allows you to clean up fights far more effectively than Aphelios can. Position to safely contribute damage early, then look to snowball once your passive activates. Aphelios lacks this reset mechanic, so if fights go long, you have the advantage. Be aware of Aphelios's Gravitum in teamfights - if he marks multiple targets and activates the root, it can set up devastating follow-up CC from his team. Stay at maximum Fishbones range and use Flame Chompers defensively to create zones that prevent enemy divers from reaching you. If Aphelios has Crescendum turret set up in a choke point, do not fight in that area; wait for it to expire or force fights elsewhere on the map.
Pro Tips
- Track Aphelios's weapon cycle by watching his off-hand weapon ammo. When his off-hand is nearly empty, he's about to swap to a new primary weapon and may have an awkward combination for 10-15 seconds - this is your window to force trades or all-ins.
- Your Zap! (W) reveals Aphelios through fog of war and can interrupt his Severum Q channel if timed correctly. Use it to scout bushes before face-checking, especially when he might have Calibrum marks ready to snipe you from range.
- Against Aphelios's Moonlight Vigil, Flash sideways rather than backward - the initial hit applies his main-hand weapon effect to everyone hit, so dodging entirely is far better than just creating distance. His R + Infernum combo has ended more games than any other weapon interaction.
Common Mistakes
- Fighting in minion waves when Aphelios has Infernum - his Duskwave Q and auto attacks splash through minions, dealing significantly more damage than expected and often healing him substantially if paired with Severum's lifesteal.
- Underestimating Crescendum's damage at close range. Each chakram he's stacked increases his DPS dramatically, and fighting near his turret or after he's used abilities to stack chakrams will result in you losing trades you expected to win.
- Using Super Mega Death Rocket! at close range against Aphelios. Jinx's ultimate does less damage the closer you are - save it for long-range executes or cross-map snipes rather than using it in lane skirmishes where Aphelios can simply lifesteal through the reduced damage.
