Jhin vs Lucian
Learn how to play Jhin against Lucian in ADC. Lane notes paired with a visible 11,166 game sample.
ADC guide based on 11,166 ranked games from patch 15.3-16.12.
What to remember
- This lane is a coinflip - Jhin wins about 50 of every 100 across 7,808 ranked games, a hair over half.
- Most early deaths land 2:00-6:00 (71% of them). Play safe there.
- Survive to 4:56 (median first death)
- Place W perpendicular to Lucian's E trajectory - he has a fixed dash distance and experienced Jhins can root him at the endpoint every time he dashes aggressively
How to Trade
This lane is a coinflip - Jhin wins about 50 of every 100 across 7,808 ranked games, a hair over half. Your edge is range: make Lucian close the gap to trade. Your auto attack range (550) matches his, but your fourth shot crits and your Q (Dancing Grenade) can poke from safety while he farms. The key interaction is Lucian's Piercing Light (Q) - he needs to target a minion or you to fire it, so position perpendicular to the wave rather than behind it to avoid free poke. Lucian wants short, explosive trades where he can proc Press the Attack with his passive double-shots. Your goal is to never let him complete a full combo. When he dashes (E) forward aggressively, immediately W (Deadly Flourish) where he'll land - if your support has damaged him or you've tagged him with Q bounce, the root will punish his aggression hard. His E cooldown resets partially on his passive procs, so if you see him dash in and miss abilities, that's your window to chunk him with fourth shot. Post-6, the dynamic shifts further in your favor. Lucian's Culling requires him to stand still or move slowly in one direction, making him an easy W root target. Your Curtain Call outranges his entire kit - if he tries to all-in, simply ult from max range while your support peels. The data shows you should hit 6 by 7:37; if you hit this timing before him, immediately look for an aggressive ult play.
Wave Management
Jhin's wave control is excellent against Lucian due to Dancing Grenade's ability to thin waves quickly. Your goal is to maintain a slight push early (levels 1-3) to hit level 2 first - Q the back line when minions are low to maximize bounces and damage. This denies Lucian the level 2 all-in he desperately wants with his E-Q-passive combo. During this period, keep the wave slightly on your side of the lane, around the middle or just past river. This positioning lets you poke with Q bounces while having escape room when Lucian looks for trades. Never hard shove into his tower during this window - Lucian with Relentless Pursuit near his tower is extremely dangerous, and you have no mobility to escape ganks. After your first back (aim for 3,678g by 10:00), you can play more aggressively with wave states. Slow push large waves into his tower, then use the crash timing to place E (Captive Audience) traps in river and tri-bush. Lucian struggles to farm under tower early due to his reload mechanic, so tower crashes punish him more than most ADCs. Your 71 CS by 10:00 benchmark is very achievable if you focus on using fourth shot to secure cannons.
Itemization
Rush Infinity Edge components, prioritizing B. F. Sword on first back. The raw AD synergizes with your fourth shot and makes your Q bounces significantly more threatening. Boots timing matters in this matchup. Lucian will likely rush Essence Reaver or Navori Quickblades for ability haste - you want Boots of Swiftness or Berserker's Greaves before he completes his mythic to maintain spacing. Swifties are particularly valuable because they reduce the slow from his W (Ardent Blaze), which he uses to chase you down. For your second item, Rapid Firecannon is essential. The extended range on your energized attack lets you poke Lucian from outside his effective trading range (his Q through minions). If Lucian rushes Blade of the Ruined King (common in this matchup for the sustain), consider Lord Dominik's Regards third instead of your usual Collector - the armor penetration counters any early Plated Steelcaps he might buy to survive your burst.
Team Fighting
Jhin massively outscales Lucian in teamfights due to Curtain Call's ability to influence fights from fog of war. In games you win here, your range and zone control carry into teamfights. But this lane is a coinflip and the gold curve trends slightly against you, so play it even, not ahead. Your role is to open fights with R from maximum range, forcing Lucian to either engage into your team while taking damage or wait out your ult and lose the window. Lucian's teamfight pattern is diving backlines with E resets - your W root completely shuts this down. Save Deadly Flourish for when he commits forward; a rooted Lucian in your frontline is a dead Lucian. The 15-minute timing is critical - the data shows a -309g differential at this point, indicating Lucian's strongest relative spike. Group with your team rather than splitting, as Lucian can run you down in side lanes with his mobility. In 5v5s, your traps (E) zone him away from flanking angles, and your fourth shot crits from the backline will consistently outdamage his Culling, which requires him to stand still and become vulnerable.
Pro Tips
- Place W perpendicular to Lucian's E trajectory - he has a fixed dash distance and experienced Jhins can root him at the endpoint every time he dashes aggressively
- Your fourth shot reload timing is longer than Lucian's passive double-tap - always reload in fog of war or behind minions, never while he has E available to punish
- At level 6, if Lucian uses Culling, immediately Curtain Call back at him - your ult has longer range and he's locked in place, making all four shots easy to land
Common Mistakes
- Trading auto-for-auto in minion waves - Lucian's passive gives him two autos for every ability, so short trades without your fourth shot always lose
- Using W predictively when Lucian has E available - he'll simply dash through it and all-in you while it's on cooldown; wait for him to commit his dash first
- Overextending for CS between 2:00-6:00 - the data shows this is when most deaths occur, and Lucian's level 3 all-in with an aggressive support can 100-0 you if you're past river
