What to remember
- Jhin holds a significant advantage in trading against Ezreal through the burst of his fourth shot, which crits and chunks Ezreal each reload cycle.
- Most early deaths land 2:00-6:00 (69% of them). Play safe there.
- Survive to 5:15 (median first death)
- Track Ezreal's E cooldown (28-20 seconds based on level). After he uses it, you have a guaranteed 4+ second window where your W is unmissable and he cannot escape an all-in with your support.
How to Trade
Jhin holds a significant advantage in trading against Ezreal through the burst of his fourth shot, which crits and chunks Ezreal each reload cycle. Both auto-attack from 550 range, so his edge is damage, not reach. The key to winning trades is to use your Q (Dancing Grenade) to poke through the minion wave - if it kills minions before bouncing to Ezreal, it deals increased damage. Ezreal's primary trading tool is his Q (Mystic Shot), which is a skillshot you can sidestep or position behind minions to block. When Ezreal uses E (Arcane Shift) aggressively, he becomes extremely vulnerable for the next 25+ seconds - this is your window to land W (Deadly Flourish) and follow up with your fourth shot for massive damage. The critical interaction in this matchup is Jhin's W root versus Ezreal's E. If Ezreal has already used his E, landing your W becomes trivially easy and guarantees a favorable trade or even a kill with your support's follow-up. Save your W for when Ezreal commits forward or after your support lands any form of CC. Your W's 2500 range also means you can contribute to ganks from your jungler even if Ezreal tries to E away - the root duration gives your team time to collapse.
Wave Management
Your goal is to establish a slow push into Ezreal starting from level 1-2, then crash a large wave under his tower around the 2:00-2:30 mark. After crashing, let the wave bounce back and look to freeze near your tower - Ezreal's lack of waveclear early means he cannot break a freeze without overextending. Ezreal players will try to use Q to last-hit from range and avoid interacting with you directly. Punish this by standing in the wave to threaten trades whenever he walks up. Your Q bounces are excellent for both trading and maintaining wave control simultaneously. Before key timings like your level 6 power spike (aim for 7:48, with fast players hitting 6:59), ensure you have the wave pushing toward the enemy so you can threaten an all-in with Curtain Call or roam to help your jungler secure objectives.
Itemization
Rush Serrated Dirk on your first back (ideally around 1,100g at your 3,773g by 10:00 benchmark). The lethality spike is devastating against Ezreal's low base armor, and it makes your fourth shot and Q bounces hit significantly harder. Complete The Collector first - the execute passive synergizes perfectly with your fourth shot's missing health damage, often securing kills Ezreal thinks he can E away from. If Ezreal builds early armor or if their team has multiple AD threats, consider Lord Dominik's Regards as your fourth item. Against teams where Ezreal has strong peel supports like Lulu or Janna, Rapid Firecannon becomes even more valuable as it lets you poke from safety before committing to fights.
Team Fighting
In teamfights, your role against Ezreal shifts from lane bully to execution specialist. Ezreal's strength is sustained DPS from safety with his Q spam and Muramana procs, while yours is burst damage and pick potential. Use your W to root Ezreal when he positions aggressively for Q pokes - this often forces his E defensively, removing his only escape. Your Curtain Call is particularly effective against Ezreal because he cannot E while slowed by your bullets, and the ability provides vision that prevents him from juking in fog of war. Position to threaten Ezreal's backline access. If he E's forward to chase a low-health ally, immediately W him for the root and follow up with your team's burst. In extended fights, your fourth shot crits will consistently out-trade his Q damage, especially with your movement speed steroid letting you kite effectively. You scale better into mid-game teamfights here than Ezreal does, despite his reputation as a scaling champion - press that window with range and picks.
Pro Tips
- Track Ezreal's E cooldown (28-20 seconds based on level). After he uses it, you have a guaranteed 4+ second window where your W is unmissable and he cannot escape an all-in with your support.
- Use your E (Captive Audience) traps in the river brush and tri-bush to spot jungle ganks early - the vision and slow often save you during the dangerous 2:00-6:00 window when most deaths occur.
- When Ezreal recalls, use Curtain Call to either snipe him in fountain (if low) or zone him off the wave to deny CS and maintain your gold lead. The 11,499g average advantage comes from consistently punishing his weak waveclear.
Common Mistakes
- Using W before Ezreal uses E - good Ezreal players will simply Arcane Shift your root and then have a free trade window while your W is on cooldown. Always bait or wait for his E first.
- Pushing mindlessly without tracking the enemy jungler.
- Ignoring the level 6 timing. Jhin's Curtain Call is a massive power spike that Ezreal cannot match with his R (which is primarily waveclear). If you hit 6 first at the 7:24 benchmark, immediately look for an all-in or roam opportunity.
