What to remember

How to Trade

This matchup heavily revolves around Malphite's Granite Shield passive and your ability to break it efficiently. Your primary trading pattern should be Cannon form E-Q (Acceleration Gate + Shock Blast) to pop his shield, then wait for him to waste mana trying to trade back with Seismic Shard (Q) before committing to extended trades. Malphite's Q costs 70-90 mana and has a 9-second cooldown early, so tracking this cooldown is essential for knowing when to pressure. The key is to bait out his E before switching to Hammer form for your burst combo. A clean trade looks like: poke with ranged Q until his shield breaks, wait for him to E defensively, then immediately transform and go in with Q-W-AA-E (To The Skies, Lightning Field, auto attacks, Thundering Blow) to knock him away before he can retaliate. Post-6, respect Malphite's all-in potential with Unstoppable Force (R). Your Thundering Blow (Hammer E) can interrupt dashes, but Malphite's ultimate is unstoppable during the dash. Save your knockback for after he lands to create distance and prevent follow-up damage.

Wave Management

Early game, use your ranged form to build slow pushes and crash waves into his tower. Malphite has terrible waveclear before Bami's Cinder, and forcing him to CS under tower while his shield is down creates significant CS differentials. 4 CS at 15 minutes in this matchup, which translates to meaningful gold advantages. Avoid perma-pushing after level 6 without vision. Malphite's ultimate makes him an excellent gank setup, and an extended lane leaves you vulnerable. Instead, freeze near your tower when you have a lead - Malphite cannot break freezes effectively without taking massive poke damage, and he lacks the waveclear to force resets. Only break your freeze to crash and recall for key item spikes like Serrated Dirk or to rotate for objectives.

Itemization

Rush Black Cleaver as your first major item in this matchup. The armor shred stacks synergize perfectly with your rapid ability rotations, and the health helps survive his burst combo. Spear of Shojin second gives you the ability haste to constantly pressure his shield cooldown. For defensive options, Maw of Malmortius is excellent if Malphite builds AP or if their team has additional magic damage threats. Edge of Night's spell shield can block his Seismic Shard poke in lane or potentially his ultimate engage in teamfights. Serylda's Grudge is your best armor penetration option for mid-game if he's stacking armor early with Plated Steelcaps and Bramble Vest.

Team Fighting

Your role in teamfights shifts based on Malphite's positioning. If he's looking to flank for a multi-man ultimate, your job is to stay with your backline and use Acceleration Gate to help them reposition. You cannot stop his R, but you can Thundering Blow him away immediately after he lands to prevent follow-up. When Malphite uses his ultimate offensively on someone else, that's your window to unleash full damage on their backline. His Ground Slam attack speed slow is his primary peel tool, and with it on cooldown, you can freely Hyper Charge their carries. Position to threaten flanks but don't overcommit until you see his ultimate used. Jayce averages significantly more damage to structures (17,383 vs 9,180), so split-pushing is a viable alternative if teamfighting into his engage proves too risky.

Pro Tips

  • Track Granite Shield's 8-second out-of-combat regeneration timer. One E-Q combo to break it, then immediately pressure with autos before it returns. This forces him to choose between trading back (wasting mana) or letting you chunk him for free.
  • Malphite players often max Q for poke in ranged matchups. Stand behind dying minions to make his Q targeting awkward, and use your superior sustain from Doran's Shield plus Second Wind (if taken) to outsustain his mana pool.
  • In extended fights, don't neglect Hammer form damage just because he's building armor; your magic damage component punishes pure armor stacking.

Common Mistakes

  • Using Hyper Charge while Ground Slam's attack speed slow is active. Wait the 3 seconds for it to expire, or you're wasting your strongest DPS tool and likely losing the trade despite having cooldown advantage.
  • Staying in Cannon form too long during all-ins. Malphite's E only affects attack speed, not ability damage. Your Hammer Q-E combo deals significant burst that bypasses his attack speed slow entirely - transform earlier in fights.
  • Disrespecting Malphite's level 6 all-in even when ahead. Always keep mental track of your knockback cooldown when playing aggressive post-6.
