What to remember
- Caitlyn holds a significant range advantage over Jhin (650 vs 550), which is the cornerstone of this matchup.
- Most early deaths land 2:00-6:00 (69% of them). Play safe there.
- Survive to 4:40 (median first death)
- Track Jhin's ammo count (shown below his health bar). His 4th shot crits and deals bonus execute damage, but he's helpless during the 2.5-second reload - this is your window to take aggressive trades or all-in with your support.
How to Trade
Caitlyn holds a significant range advantage over Jhin (650 vs 550), which is the cornerstone of this matchup. Abuse this by auto-attacking Jhin whenever he steps up to last hit, especially when he's on his 4th shot reload animation - he's completely vulnerable during this 2.5-second window and cannot trade back. Your Headshot passive synergizes perfectly with this playstyle; stack it on minions and look to proc it on Jhin when he's locked in his reload. Jhin's Deadly Flourish (W) can only root you if you've been marked by damage from him, his traps, or his allies in the last 4 seconds. Play around this by staying behind minions to block his Q bounce damage, and immediately back off if you take any poke to deny the root setup. When trading, lead with E (90 Caliber Net) into Q (Piltover Peacemaker) for burst, but save E defensively if Jhin has his support ready to engage - the net is your only escape from ganks. During levels 1-5, focus on establishing lane dominance through superior range. Jhin's Q (Dancing Grenade) deals increased damage with each bounce kill, so thin the wave carefully to deny him easy bounces onto you. After hitting level 6, be mindful of Jhin's Curtain Call - if you're low and he has R available, he can execute you from 3000+ range. Your own Ace in the Hole is better used to finish kills on retreating targets or to snipe Jhin when he's channeling his ultimate.
Wave Management
Start by slow-pushing the first two waves, using your range to harass Jhin while building a 3-wave crash into his tower around 2:30-3:00. This timing lets you safely recall or take a cheater recall while denying Jhin CS under tower. After the initial crash, let the wave bounce back and establish a freeze just outside your tower range. Jhin struggles to break freezes because his reload mechanic limits his ability to quickly shove waves, and he's extremely gankable when extended. Hold this freeze until you hit your 75 CS by 10:00 benchmark, only breaking it to crash before objective spawns or when your jungler is topside. Place Yordle Snap Traps (W) in the river brush and behind your freeze position to create a safe zone. If Jhin tries to break your freeze with Q bounces, punish him with Headshot-empowered autos. Reset the wave state around 7:30-8:00 to set up for your level 6 power spike at 7:28, so you have lane priority when both ultimates come online.
Itemization
Rush Doran's Blade into Noonquiver on first back (aim for 1300g). The attack speed from Noonquiver amplifies your Headshot stacking and helps you maintain CS pressure. Your first completed item should be The Collector - its lethality synergizes with your Headshot damage and the execute passive punishes Jhin's relatively low base health pool. Berserker's Greaves timing matters - complete them after Noonquiver if you're even or ahead, but delay for Pickaxe if you're behind and need raw damage to contest waves. Against Jhin specifically, the attack speed helps you output more autos during his reload windows. For situational items, consider Lord Dominik's Regards third if Jhin builds Phantom Dancer or if their team has multiple armor stackers. If Jhin's team has heavy dive (assassins or engage supports), Guardian Angel fourth keeps you safe. Bloodthirster is excellent as a fourth or fifth item for sustain in extended sieges, which Caitlyn excels at.
Team Fighting
Your teamfight role differs significantly from Jhin's. While he wants to sit at maximum range and poke with W and R, you should be looking for trap placements in chokepoints and using your superior DPS to shred frontline. Place Yordle Snap Traps behind enemy frontliners during fights - if they step back, they're rooted; if they don't, your team collapses on them. Jhin's Curtain Call makes him stationary and vulnerable. If he channels R in a teamfight, you have two options: either use your range to continue DPSing his team while he's locked in place, or reposition to threaten him directly with Ace in the Hole after his channel. Never stand still when Curtain Call is active - keep moving laterally to make his skill shots difficult. In sieges, you massively outperform Jhin. Your 1300 range on trapped targets combined with Rapid Firecannon lets you poke from safety while your traps zone enemies off tower. Caitlyn averages 21,559 damage to structures versus Jhin's 17,156 - use this by prioritizing tower takes after winning fights.
Pro Tips
- Track Jhin's ammo count (shown below his health bar). His 4th shot crits and deals bonus execute damage, but he's helpless during the 2.5-second reload - this is your window to take aggressive trades or all-in with your support.
- When Jhin places Captive Audience traps in lane brushes, counter by placing your own Yordle Snap Traps directly on top of them. Your trap activates faster and will catch him if he tries to use the brush for trading angles.
- Save your E (90 Caliber Net) for when Jhin lands W root or when his support engages. The net's knockback cleanly escapes Jhin's follow-up damage and repositions you to punish with Q and Headshot while he's committed forward.
Common Mistakes
- Walking up to trade while marked for Deadly Flourish - if Jhin or his support has damaged you in the last 4 seconds, stay back until the mark expires or you will eat a guaranteed root into full combo.
- Using Ace in the Hole on a Jhin who has Flash or Galeforce available. Your R has a long channel and travel time; wait until his mobility is down or he's CC'd before committing your ultimate.
- Pushing waves mindlessly before level 6.
