What to remember

How to Trade

Caitlyn holds a significant range advantage over Ezreal (650 vs 550 base attack range), which is the cornerstone of winning this matchup. Use your superior range to poke Ezreal whenever he steps up to last hit with auto attacks, and look to proc Headshot passive on him when he's animation-locked during CS. Your Piltover Peacemaker (Q) outranges his Mystic Shot (Q), so you can harass from safer distances, but be mindful that his Q has a shorter cooldown and he'll look to trade back through the minion wave. The key trading interaction is understanding Ezreal's Arcane Shift (E). When Ezreal uses E aggressively to reposition for trades, immediately place a Yordle Snap Trap (W) at his landing location or where he's likely to retreat to - his E has a long 28-second cooldown at rank 1, so punish this window hard. Your 90 Caliber Net (E) can be used both to create distance if he E's onto you or to chase him down after he wastes his escape. Avoid extended trades where he can stack Conqueror or repeatedly land Q's; instead, focus on short, auto-attack-heavy trades where your range and Headshot damage shine. Ezreal is entirely skillshot-based, so positioning behind minions negates a huge portion of his damage. However, don't stand directly behind low-health minions as good Ezreal players will Q through the dying minion to hit you. Sidestep unpredictably and use your range to force him to choose between CSing and trading - he cannot do both effectively against a Caitlyn who spaces properly.

Wave Management

Caitlyn naturally pushes waves faster than Ezreal due to her Headshot passive stacking on net hits and her Q's waveclear potential. Use this to your advantage by establishing early push priority to hit level 2 first (first wave + 3 melee minions of second wave), which gives you kill threat with your support. Place traps in the river brush or tri-bush while pushing to protect against ganks and create zone control. When you have the wave pushed, place Yordle Snap Traps behind the enemy tower or in chokepoints around the lane. This denies Ezreal safe farming positions and forces him to path predictably. Ezreal struggles to contest hard shoves early because his waveclear is mana-intensive and his Q doesn't pass through minions. However, avoid mindlessly shoving post-6 as Ezreal's Trueshot Barrage (R) gives him excellent waveclear to safely farm from distance and set up ganks on you. If Ezreal freezes the wave near his tower, respect that his jungler may be nearby. Use your Q to break freezes from max range, and consider placing traps in the lane to discourage all-ins while you reset the wave. In this even-scaling matchup, denying Ezreal safe tear stacking and forcing him to use mana on wave management rather than poke is a subtle but important win condition.

Itemization

The lethality from Collector amplifies your poke damage and the execute passive helps secure kills on Ezreal, who often survives at low HP due to his slippery nature. Rush Serrated Dirk on your first back if possible to spike your trading power. Rapid Firecannon is an excellent third item choice as it extends your already superior range, making it nearly impossible for Ezreal to trade effectively. The energized proc combined with Headshot creates massive poke damage. Against Ezreal specifically, Lord Dominik's Regards can be delayed unless the enemy team is stacking armor, since Ezreal typically builds damage-focused items and remains squishy. For defensive options, consider Guardian Angel if Ezreal's team has dive threats that can reach you, or Bloodthirster for sustain in prolonged sieges. If Ezreal rushes Frozen Heart (a niche but annoying build), you may need to adjust by prioritizing Lord Dominik's earlier. Berserker's Greaves remain standard, but Plated Steelcaps are viable if their team is heavily AD and you're being focused.

Team Fighting

In teamfights, both Caitlyn and Ezreal function as backline carries, but Caitlyn offers more zone control while Ezreal provides more self-peel and repositioning. Your job is to place Yordle Snap Traps in chokepoints before fights begin - around objectives, in jungle corridors, or behind your frontline. These traps zone Ezreal's team and can catch him if he Arcane Shifts aggressively. Your Ace in the Hole (R) is best used either at the start of fights to chunk a priority target or to execute fleeing enemies. Against Ezreal specifically, be aware that any enemy champion can body-block your ultimate, and Ezreal himself can Arcane Shift to dodge it if he has vision of you channeling. Try to ult when Ezreal's E is on cooldown or when he's CC'd. Conversely, Ezreal's Trueshot Barrage is a global threat that can snipe you from fog of war, so maintain high HP when possible. Positioning-wise, stay at maximum range and use your 90 Caliber Net defensively to create distance from divers. Ezreal will look to poke with Q from safe angles before committing - match his patience and look for Headshot procs on enemies who step on traps or get CC'd by your team. Your superior range means you generally win the ADC-vs-ADC damage race if both teams' frontlines are occupied.

Pro Tips

  • Track Ezreal's Arcane Shift cooldown (28/25/22/19/16s) religiously - when it's down, he's extremely vulnerable to your E-W-Headshot combo or jungle ganks. Ping your jungler when you see him waste it.
  • Place traps at Ezreal's tower during sieges to zone him off CS and force him to clear waves with abilities, draining his mana pool and preventing him from safely stacking Tear of the Goddess.
  • Use the brush to drop minion aggro after auto-attacking Ezreal, then immediately auto again when you exit. This lets you win trades harder while taking minimal minion damage and keeps you unpredictable for his Q skillshots.

Common Mistakes

  • Standing still or moving predictably while CSing - Ezreal players will punish this with easy Mystic Shot pokes. Always sidestep between autos, especially when your support isn't in position to trade back.
  • Using 90 Caliber Net aggressively without tracking Ezreal's E cooldown. If he has Arcane Shift available, he can dodge your net and then all-in you while your only escape is down for 16 seconds.
  • Tunneling on killing Ezreal in lane when the matchup is fundamentally even. Caitlyn wins by accumulating small gold leads through superior CS and tower plates, not by forcing risky all-ins against a champion with a blink.
